Making the decision to enter into Vanlife felt easy and natural, but we knew that finding a van that we could make feel like a home and not spend the rest of our lives paying for would not be a small task.
Not even a couple weeks into our craigslist searches we stumbled upon an add for a 2002 Dodge camper van in our local area. It had a lot of miles on it and we could tell from the photos it was decked out in purple shag. Not expecting much we went to check it out. It was love at first sight.
The layout was perfect for us and we were confident we could easily ditch the purple that covered every square inch. Ten minutes into the test drive, we broke down. Of course it was too good to be true, broken down on the side of the road we were heartbroken as the tow truck hauled away our dream van. As it turned out it was a very simple fix and a detailed inspection assured us that the van was in really stellar condition. So we made an offer…
It happened so fast it didn’t feel real but, we were officially brand new owners of a very used 2002 Dodge Phoenix 3500 camper van with 210,000 miles on the speedometer. With a shiny new Jasper engine and transmission dropped in her we felt very comfortable with our $7,500 purchase.
You read that right. $7,500
A bare bones used Sprinter with 200,000 miles costs more than $15,000.
Stoked on our fate we now had our very own home on wheels…
Vanlife here we come!!
