You should know by now there are basically no rules in the Baja. In America we always have to be on the lookout for local traffic laws and regulations. Driving on beaches? Camping with the ocean right out your van door? Pretty much unheard of nowadays in the Land of the Free. Thank god for our neighbors to the South who still know how to throw a beach party! There’s no doubt that Baja, Mexico is the mecca for epic beach camping. Traveling in your van, a lifted 4×4 or by bike, Baja will deliver with first class beach camping accommodations no matter what!
We are here with some helpful Beach Camping tips and to hopefully point you in the right direction to some of our favorite Baja Beach Campsites. If nothing else maybe our tips will get you lost and you can get back to us on all the epic spots you found along the way! Sound good? Ok here we go!
Get a Treasure Map
We aren’t usually the ones who suggest looking at a map. Clark refuses to listen to directions from Siri, or ask for them when we are lost but that’s a rant for another day. We recommend buying the National Geographic Baja Map Pack. Not only are these maps extremely detailed but they split up the Baja Peninsula into two different sections. You get a map of the Northern Baja California and a separate map of Southern Baja Sur California. These will be your treasure maps to finding off the beaten path campsite gold. Pick any dirt road on the map bordering the coast and we guarantee you’ll find the most prime beach campsite of your life!

Start Small, Then Go Big or Go Home!
Knowing your limits is very important to have an enjoyable beach camping experience. If you get stuck 10 miles from the beach then no one is having a sunset cerveza. It’s easy to start small in the Baja and gradually adventure further out when you’re ready! We travel in a Class B Van pulling a trailer and found amazing beach campsites everywhere we went. Did we push our limits a few times? Well duh, that’s what makes for a misadventure! Worst case scenario is losing a little pride when you ask a fellow camper for a push out.
Dont Forget Your Plan B
When you feel ready to step up your beach camping game remember the Baja is a desert. And a very unpopulated one at that. If you plan on venturing off the main Mex Highway 1 then you better be prepared for any type of vehicle breakdown because Triple A is a long ways away. Like “they don’t give a fuck” long ways away. This means having a shovel to dig out tires stuck in sand, a reliable spare tire and jack (no donut tires!), battery powered air compressor/ battery jumper, Fix A Flat, and EXTRA GAS. You know your whip best so pack extras of anything that might cause your vehicle to break down.
Misadventure Theory’s Top 5 Baja Beach Campsites
Now that you are ready to hit the dirt road and experience the best beach camping this world has to offer we are going to let you in on some of our favorite Baja Beach campsites to get you started. This is a very short list but definitely some must hit spots if you are camping in the Baja.
All these beach campsites are relatively easy access (all 2WD accessible) but can still surprise you at any moment with a flat tire or some serious soft sand. So be prepared and if you’re not sure about the entrance get out and walk your path first!
Playa Escondida, Bahia De Concepcion
This spot stole our hearts at the end of our trip. Maybe it was the pods of dolphins swimming by our kayaks, the neon bioluminescence sparkling in the waves at night or the amazing community feel from all the other travelers. Whatever it was we will definitely be back!
Hot Springs Beach, La Ventana
Right outside of the Baja kiteboarding mecca Hot Springs Beach offers a little of everything. If the famous wind shows up hop on the water for a kite lesson. If the wind stays away head up into the hills right behind your campsite for some amazing single track biking or hiking trails. After your activity of choice head down to the end of beach where you’ll find natural hot springs that fill with the incoming high tide. Ummm can you say amazing?!
Los Frailes Beach, Cabo Pulmo
Located in the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, Los Frailes is the ultimate under water playground. It is the location of Baja’s largest coral reef that is 20,000 years old, home to thousands of colorful fish and a playful sea lion colony you can swim with. If you love snorkeling or scuba diving this is the spot for you!
Playa Tecolote, La Paz
Playa Tecolote is probably the most popular beach for camping in the Baja but for good reason. Easy access, wide open space and beautiful views of the Sea of Cortez islands off the Baja coast. Oh did we mention that the #1 rated beach in all of Mexico, Balandra Beach, is a half mile paddle away! If you’re not tired out after playing all day, 100 yards away are a few beachside cocktail bars that serve some amazing Pina Coladas!
Playa Pescadero, Pescadero
Home to one of the only safe swimming beaches and a great surf break as well, Playa Pescadero is the perfect spot for a layover on the Pacific Ocean. Don’t miss the Local Market held every Sunday at the local coffee plantation Baja Beans and make sure to plan a day trip to the famous town of Todos Santos. There you can tour the famous Hotel California and get the best fish tacos known to man at Jorge’s Tacos!
